Scary Times

Posted on May 11, 2016 By

Money and the media have decided who our presidential candidates will be. Both Trump and Clinton have tremendous coverage; Sanders is too normal to claim much attention. Some experts predict economic collapse for the US if Trump is elected. Others predict even worse outcomes. We fuss, but what are we doing to stop this? Scary times!

Sliding Past Troubles. That’s my new goal. I don’t need to run into each new challenge as if it’s a wall I need to take down.

Help Getting Out of a Bad Place

Posted on March 24, 2016 By

Once, I was in a bad place and a friend asked what he could do to help. I thought about it, and asked him to ask me four questions. It occurred to me (but naturally, I forget) that I can ask myself these same questions:

  1. What are you afraid of right now?
  2. What do you want to believe?
  3. Is there any part of you that can believe that right now?
  4. What can I say to you right now that would make you feel better?

It helps.

The Path to Enlightenment

Posted on February 10, 2016 By

I’m not there, heavens no! But I’m so much farther along the path of spiritual understanding than I was when I started out decades ago. Right now, I’m still learning, but I’m in a pretty good place.

I’ve gotten where I am step-by-step, one book, CD, workshop, conversation at a time. No one person or thing has fixed me by much, but each has contributed to the body of knowledge that shapes me.

Maybe that’s the only way we can get “there” (while understanding that there is no “there” to finally get to. Maybe looking for a small improvement is better than aiming for enlightenment.

Kind of like eating: We have meals as it seems appropriate; we never think we’ll finally eat the perfect meal and then be done.

Scary Times

Posted on February 2, 2016 By

It scares me to see how far Donald Trump has gotten in the contest for the White House. To be the leader of the free world. To have our relationships with countries that, let’s face it, we need to cooperate with, left in the hands of a man whose code of conduct is “My way or the highway.” While this thinking is fun to entertain, surely we know it doesn’t work in the real world unless we literally don’t care what happens next.

It scares me that the welfare of a nation filled with people who struggle to find work that pays enough to feed a family, pay for healthcare, education for their children, is decided by a man whose father left him his wealth and who has declared bankruptcy four times.

It scares me to think that he apparently leads nearly half of our country in thinking that is racist, sexist, ageist, and against everything else that requires us to be tolerant, to allow for people to be who they are and not always who we’d like them to be.

I hope, I pray, that the anger that supports Trump for President will soon be tempered by reason. I don’t think I’d be exaggerating to say that if Donald Trump wins the presidency, life as we know it will change; and not in a good way.

Fear

Posted on January 10, 2016 By

Fear wants to be with me, whispering her messages into my ear, but I’ve made another choice: I will no longer entertain her, no longer let her have my attention.

She’s a persistent little thing, and while there might be a valid warning from time to time, which I will appreciate, I will send her away once her concern is noted.

There are so many other voices to listen to – my own and those of my inner guidance. They are the better voices to get comfort and guidance from.

A Question

Posted on December 31, 2015 By

What will it take for us to finally treat our black people with the equality and respect they deserve?

I believe we can’t count on politicians and laws to make the change; it will happen when the women stand up and say, “It’s time.” So many changes have happened when we’ve done that. Will 2016 be the year we take charge and say, “Enough! It’s way past time”?

We can start in our own daily lives by not just being friendly, but engaging with each other. When I asked a black friend why black women politely decline invitations to join white women’s groups, she said, “We don’t want to be your token black.” Okay, I get the sentiment, but not the logic: Why? Wouldn’t that be a place to start? I’d happily be a black group’s token white.

We need to know each other; we need to know that there are wonderful black men; there are wonderful white men. Wonderful women and children of all colors.

We need to play together.

Maybe we could do a better job writing school textbooks – make it clear that white people brought black people to America and treated them terribly. Show what it must have been like for slaves to be removed from their homes, transported to another country, and be made to work, with no rights, at the whim of another person.

Textbooks could show how, once free, many black people contributed a great deal to our country with their inventions, their art, their hard work, their patience.

Schools could teach how much people are all alike: in the beginning, what we want most is love and respect and acceptance. Racial acceptance could be demonstrated by teachers, employers, law enforcement workers, clergy, politicians, media, creators of music and movies.

And, at some point, we all need to stop pointing fingers at each other and listing all the wrongs done to us. We need to stand together and insist on justice for everybody.

Could 2016 be the year we make a real change?

Grant Me…

Posted on December 23, 2015 By

So many writings start with, “Grant me…”

Yet my metaphysical training says the moment the thought is formed, the wish is fulfilled.

So instead of chewing on what I don’t like and asking for change, I want to remember to notice what I love in my life and gratefully expect there will be more. This isn’t to say I’ll sit on my couch all day and expect the world to deliver everything to my door (though that does often happen), but that I’ll be a positive co-creator and take action when it’s appropriate, too.

The perfect path, today and forever, is already here just waiting for me to say yes. And maybe make a phone call or two…

Reminder to Self

Posted on December 11, 2015 By

Ask myself: How can I make this easy?

Everyone has troubles. Be nice.

Tell the Truth. Tell the Truth. What is really going on?

Ask myself: Am I living my pattern, or my plan?

Be patient with everybody. Including myself.
